VAT rate 13.5%, VAT €398.25, total €3,348.25.
How it works
Building work in Ireland is charged at 13.5%. The two-thirds rule changes that: when the materials cost you more than two-thirds of the price before VAT, the whole job is charged at 23%.
Exactly two-thirds stays at 13.5%. The calculator compares the two in whole cents, the same way QuotePaid checks every quote, so the line falls exactly where the rule puts it.
Questions
What they cost you, before VAT. The two-thirds rule looks at your cost of the materials against the price of the whole job, not at the price you put on the materials. A big mark-up on materials doesn’t push a job over the line by itself.
The job stays at 13.5%. The rule only moves the whole job to 23% when the materials cost more than two-thirds of the price. A quick check: multiply the materials cost by 3 and the price by 2. If the first number is bigger, it’s 23%.
Not under RCT. When you work for a main contractor under RCT, the main contractor accounts for the VAT, so you don’t charge it and the rule doesn’t come into it. The guide on VAT for tradespeople has the details and links to Revenue.
No. The sums run in your browser and nothing you type leaves it. At most we count that the calculator was used, with no numbers attached, so we know whether it’s worth keeping. Close the page and what you typed is gone.
QuotePaid does this on every quote.
